Reimagine the Longview Hospice Care Center

Comforting Generations, Advancing Care

When Community Home Health & Hospice (Community) built the Longview Hospice Care Center nearly 40 years ago, it was Washington state’s first inpatient hospice facility and only the 26th in the nation. It remains the only inpatient hospice facility in Cowlitz County.

The Center was expanded in 1997 and has not been updated for nearly a quarter of a century. Community is reinvesting in Cowlitz County’s only hospice care center to support Southwest Washington’s growing senior population and to meet advancements in medical care, security, technology, and infection control.

Designed for a Post-pandemic World

In February 2020, Community received results of a feasibility study proposing construction of a new facility at a cost of $6 million. Then COVID hit and we had to reassess our plans to be more cost effective, and to deliver care in a post-pandemic world. The revised plan calls for a renovation of the existing center as a modernized hospice campus with increased clinical space and state-of-the-art technology at an estimated cost of just $4.2 million—a 30% decrease from the original $6 million proposal.

  • Provide the latest in security, technology, and infection control
  • Add multifaith chapel for prayer, meditation, and reflection
  • Add children’s area
  • Add patient gardens
  • Add easy access to an established memorial garden and grief support center
  • Add conference area for families, visitors and staff including social workers and chaplains
Community Home Health & Hospice's Longview Hospice Care Center in 1984

Washington’s First Hospice Center

Built by the community for the community

Agency founder Lorraine Berndt had a vision for a hospice facility that could provide skilled care and feel like home at the same time. The community believed in her and her dream, and through generous land, contracting and labor donations, the Longview Hospice Care Center opened its doors in 1984. It was the first hospice facility in Washington State and only the 26th in the nation.

The Longview Hospice Care Center was truly built by the community for the community, and more than 40 years later, it has provided peace of mind to thousands of families, friends and neighbors.

Community’s Longview Hospice Care Center has been providing critical end of life support to Cowlitz County families since it opened in 1984. I wholeheartedly support the Longview Hospice Care Center Campaign, as it will ensure the care center will continue providing these services well into the future. I encourage the entire Cowlitz County community to support this vital project!
