A Heart for Bereavement at Community Home Health & Hospice

Employee Spotlight – Scott Selfridge, MSW

Scott Selfridge, MSW, never imagined that his dream job would be working with hospice families. He will be the first to tell you that he is in his dream job, doing what he was meant to do. Selfridge is a social worker for Community Home Health & Hospice. Once a person goes on hospice service, the patient and family are assigned a team of support. The team includes doctors, nurses, a social worker, and a chaplain. Selfridge’s job is to support the family through hospice and beyond. He also leads grief support groups.

“I think people would be surprised how welcoming, familiar and comfortable our groups are,” said Selfridge. “Grief support groups are extremely valuable. Everyone’s grief reaction and journey is unique. There is no right way for everyone, but meeting other people who are surviving grief provides both hope and support.” Selfridge received his Bachelor of Science in Religious Studies/Philosophy from Marylhurst University and his Master of Social Work from Portland State University. He leads a grief support group for adults at Columbia Ridge Senior Living at 2300 West 9th St, Washougal, Washington, on the 3rd Monday of each month from 3:00 pm – 4:30 pm. He would like to encourage people to stop by and ‘give it a try’. Selfridge has also worked with the Longview children’s grief group for three years. He is excited about the new Seasons of Hope Grief Center and new children’s group starting in Vancouver.

Community Home Health and Hospice offers free bereavement services to grieving families, not just those touched by hospice. They have support groups for children, teens, tweens, and adults. They offer groups for survivors of suicide loss in the spring and fall, both in Longview and in Salmon Creek, Washington.
