In 2011, Community Home Health & Hospice (Community) became national partners with We Honor Veterans (WHV). WHV is a program developed by the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization in collaboration with the Department of Veterans Affairs to provide veteran specific education for healthcare staff caring for veterans.
Community recently accepted their 500th veteran, Gerald Kolb, onto care under this program. Kolb was a Private 4th Class in the Army after being drafted at 24. He drove truck and a Vehicle Track Retriever in Germany. He remembers visiting France, Italy and Holland during Christmas leave. Upon his return, he completed his electrician apprenticeship and worked as an electrician for more than 30 years.
By recognizing the unique needs of our nation’s veterans facing a life-limiting illness, Community is better able to accompany and guide veterans and their families toward a more peaceful ending. And in cases where there might be specific needs related to the veteran’s military service, combat experience or other traumatic events, Community will find tools to help support them.
