Volunteer Spotlight – Peggy Johnson
LONGVIEW, Wash., Oct. 24, 2018 – Peggy Johnson happened upon Community Home Health & Hospice’s children’s bereavement program by accident more than 13 years ago. She was playing in a band that was invited to perform at Camp Cedars, the children’s bereavement program’s annual camp. The invitation turned into a standing request for several years and the impact on Johnson was life changing. When she returned to camp in the summer of 2006, she inquired about becoming a volunteer with the program. She took the training and started volunteering two months after camp.
This summer, Johnson was privileged to attend her 13th camp as a volunteer. Though she works and has had her own life challenges, she has not faltered in her commitment to the children’s bereavement program and camp. Johnson has been leading children’s group for the last three years. “I am grateful to Erin Orren and the wonderful team for the amazing chance to work with them throughout the year and to be a part of the camp experience,” said Johnson.
Community Home Health and Hospice offers free bereavement services to grieving families, not just those touched by hospice. They have support groups for children, teens, tweens, adults, and special groups for those who have been touched by suicide loss. The year-long children’s program ends each summer with camp. Camp Cedars helps children continue their grief work in a supportive, outdoor environment. Facilitated by trained staff and volunteers, camp activities include talking circles, art, games and storytelling.
